IIT Bombay’s Abhyuday Social Festival this weekend puts spotlight on social entrepreneurship

Mumbai: February 12,2015

IIT Bombay’s ‘Abhyuday’ is organizing the second edition of The Social Festival on 14th and 15th February, 2015, replete with themed lectures, workshops, focused group discussions, power sessions, NGOs' exhibition, Cultural Fair, Quora MeetUp, Informal events, Interactive Sessions and competitions.

 

As a part of the festival, Abhyuday is going to launch Career Counselling Campaign throughout India in which IITians will guide Indian students by providing career guidance to students.

 

Themed Lectures

Major attractions at Abhyuday 2015 include – key-note address by D R Mehta, the Founder & Chief Patron of Jaipur Foot, world's largest organization for the handicapped in terms of free fitment of artificial limbs/calipers. He is a former IAS officer and former Deputy governor of the RBI.

 

Joe Madiath,  founder of Gram Vikas, an NGO based in Orissa, that works with adivasi communities on many development projects will also deliver a special address.

 

In addition, there is also an interactive session with IIT Alumni Pratyush Rathore and Suhani Mohan who left their fat paying jobs to work for the betterment of the society.

 

There are also special lectures on ‘Social Entrepreneurship” by Harvard Business School alumnus Sumit Singh Gandhi, who is the  Founder of Sounds of Silence Foundation (SOS) India's first technology based NGO.   Shekhar Kulkarni will speak on ‘Import Substitution Engineering’.

 

Cultural Fair

As part of reviving the rich culture of our country, Abhyuday has taken the initiative of presenting the traditional artists with a platform to showcase their work during the festival through a Cultural fair such as Aranmula kannadi - a handmade metal-alloy mirror which is result of India’s rich cultural and metallurgical traditions, The Rogan art of painting - an ancient art over three hundred years old , Nail Art – using nails to create Artwork and Terracota pottery with a live hands on tutorials.

 

NGO Exhibition

An NGO Exhibition clubbed with Cultural Fair is one of the USPs of the festival. 30+ NGOs that includes Teach For India, Goonj, Child Help Foundation, Avanti, Greenpeace, India Fellows and many other NGOs from all around the nation will present their on-field experience, problems they encounter, and how they iron them out. This is a one-stop destination to glance a diverse range of NGOs working in different fields and social activities.

 

In addition, following competitions will be held to make the event interactive.

 

Competitions

Build Your Campaign is one such huge initiative to sensitize youth from all over India for the "Swachh Bharat" Abhiyan started by Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi,.

 

Opine: Ink what you think

Opine engages Youth to think, to come up with their views on various social prevailings of India. Participant will pen their views on the two spotlight topics of the time: 1.Secularism - Common law OR Religious tolerance 2.Cinema and our Life

 

Behind The Frames

A unique photography competition in which participants connect with the people who make their life better everyday. 

 

Short Film Making

Lights! Camera! Reality!  Conveying a social message through a short film. A competition to demonstrate the power of visual media as a motivating tool 

 

India Quiz

A quiz competition specifically designed to check the consciousness about our Country among youth. 

 

Abhyuday will provide the opportunity to every individual to interact with great Social Activists, Young social entrepreneurs and delegates from various NGOs. NGO delegates would be guiding participants to tackle potential challenges in solving various socio - technical problems.
